The Fellowship of the Sun is True Blood's fictional religious group against "Vampire Rights". The fictional church was run by a Rev. Theodore Newlin until he, his wife and his youngest child were killed in a supposed car accident. His son, Steve Newlin, then went public with allegations that it was no accident and in fact an assassination. (Which was true.)
Steve Newlin then took on the role of Reverend and along with his wife, Sarah, started the Light of Day Institute; where they provided military training to their "Soldiers of the Sun" as an army against vampires.
After Jason Stackhouse's girlfriend, Amy, is killed for being a "fang banger" ("Term popularized by the HBO hit show True Blood. Refers to a male or female who enjoys being bitten by and/or having sex with vampires." [1]) by a serial killer, he finds solace in the Fellowship of the Sun (they are not related to the murder) after being visited while in jail under suspicion of killing her. During his time there he trains to become a soldier of the sun to protect the innocent from the heinous vampire.
Jason, being the ladies man that he is, was lured into the group after chasing a girl and wound up being sucked into the image of purity and redemption she was selling.
This girl was Amanda Jayne, singer for the show's christian pop group "Amanda Jayne and the God Rockets". She is the face for "good christian girls" in the show. During orientation for the Light of Day institute we're introduced to something that looks like a piece of jewellery a Jonas brother would wear.

Some time after we're introduced to F.O.S we find out they have a vampire hostage. His name is Godric and he is a very old and very powerful vampire. Sookie, being the loveable protagonist that she is, devises a plan to save him and in turn gets herself kidnapped and held in the basement of the Light of Day Institute.

It is exposed that F.O.S' plan is to use silver chains to tie Godric to a cross and crucify him in the sun, (does this sound familiar? In fact, Godric tells us that he is in fact older than Jesus and "missed it") and he is there willingly and going along with Newlin's plan because he believes that it will gain the vampires some peace, making him a martyr.
Eric, who was made into a vampire by Godric, shows up with a group of vampires and teaches the christian group the meaning of "judge lest ye be judged" and unleashes a wrath biblical proportions of vampire retribution.
